autumn's joy finished!

I'm really pleased with this. It was my grand experiment with 3-ply fractal spinning, and it's a beautiful blend of structure and randomly placed color. 1 ply is a short color repeat and 2 plies are long repeats. I didn't try to match up the long repeats -- I like a little randomness in my structure. :)

buttercup & zaria

buttercup & zaria 01

buttercup - yarn, I made it!

I finally finished the Buttercup SW merino/tencel from Spincerely. 3-ply, 148 yards, 18 wpi. It’s like liquid sunshine. It fluffed up considerably more than the Zaria, possibly because I fell asleep while soaking it... for 5 hours. :)

mini mystery skein

I spun a wee tiny 11 yard (35 feet) skein last night. The roving was a mystery fiber sample that came with my roving from woolytreasures.

After the agonizing week I've had, playing with something pretty was just what I needed. I spun it all, and realized that while it would look great as a 3-ply, it might work well as a Navajo ply. That way, I wouldn't have to measure out the length, divide it into 3, blah blah blah. So I gave it a shot.

It's my second attempt at Navajo plying, and it's not bad!

a history of my first yarn

This post is for my Mom, so I can show her my first spinning project. (Hi Mom!)

It started with this roving. It's 50% superwash merino wool / 50% tencel (which is a manmade fiber made from cellulose.)

zaria 2

I spun it into thin lengths of yarn called singles.

zaria singles 01

I wound the 3 singles together into a ball in preparation for plying. (I got the idea from abbysyarns on Ravelry -- it's infinitely easier to ply from a ball than from 3 singles.) Plying is twisting the singles together to form a thicker, stronger yarn. I spin the singles clockwise, then ply them together counter-clockwise.

Last night I plied the singles, which took quite a damn while, let me tell you. This is a 3-ply yarn because it has 3 singles in the finished yarn.

Then I washed it, whacked it, and hung it to dry. This morning, it looked like this. It's BEAUTIFUL.
